The Project

We are currently constructing a pilot plant to be used for the purpose of deriving the correct strain of algae for this project. The pilot plant is located in Boshoek, near Rustenburg and Johannesburg and will start up in November 2008. Our first commercial plant is on track to open towards the end of 2009.  This will be the first of many commercial plants to be built all over the world, helping these industrial giants reduce their carbon footprint and gain coveted carbon credits.

Why this Project is Unique

Xstrata is mining a mineral and converting it with a heat process into a metal in their huge smelters, at the same time, you have to use a reductant and you have to take the oxide out of the mineral that you’re mining. In so doing, you are adding coal into the process.  The coal is absorbing the oxygen and producing large amounts of carbon dioxide. Unlike the pursuit of other biofuel options which are criticized for intruding into world food sources, the value in what we’re doing is that we take up no food sources. The algae are cultivated in a very small area of land in locations that are currently inhospitable. Although algae is a source of biofuel, our uniqueness and concentration is helping industrial giants reduce their carbon footprint, provide them with carbon credits and, as a byproduct, we produce fuel which allows the same industrial entity to utilize that fuel to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

Our product is unique in the sense that we focus on the sequestration of carbon dioxide and for every 1.8 cubic meter of carbon dioxide we feed into the algae bioreactor we produce 1 cubic meter of oxygen that we release into the atmosphere, 1 liter of vegetable oil and 1 kilogram of protein.

Our next step is to start with a pilot project at power stations which are the large producers of carbon dioxide. If we can manage to deal with the sequestration of carbon dioxide in the Ferro metal industry and power stations in the next 5-10 years in South Africa we will be making a significant contribution towards the prevention of global warning and the production of alternative fuel.
